DPS Charity Walkoff

DPS hosts company-wide pedometer challenge for charity

Dominion Payroll has begun their second annual DPS Walkoff, but with a new twist. 2010's Walkoff rewarded the teams with prizes. This year, the teams are competing for their favorite charity.

The 3-month competition centers around DPS employees wearing pedometers at work and home to record their step-counts. At the end of every week, each employee reports his or her steps to their team captains, and weekly winners are announced during Friday's company-wide catered lunch.

The DPS Walkoff fosters competition, exercise and fun; and this year, Dominion Payroll has added team-chosen charities to boost motivation even further. The company was split into six teams, and each team chose their favorite community outreach organization to represent. At the end of the 3 months, Dominion Payroll will make a charitable donation to the winning team's group.

"Last year was focused on getting the DPS crew up and moving, which was definitely good and a lot of fun," describes DPS Implementation Specialist (and Walkoff coordinator) Lindsay Zolad. "But, there was something missing. I think we figured it out: make the end-result focused on something bigger than ourselves.

The exercise competition also brings about good-natured ribbing. "We get a kick out of the fact we're trash talking for charity," added Zolad.

The organizations in focus are Beds For Kids Inc., the Children's Museum of Richmond, Comfort Zone Camp, Feedmore Inc., the Maymont Foundation, and the Special Olympics of Virginia.
